How to make homemade veggie broth from scraps! Making vegetable broth is easy and very inexpensive. It also makes your foods taste more delicious. The beautiful thing about vegetable broth is that you can use it to replace the water in just about any savory recipe to make it more flavorful. I love using it to make rice or quinoa, to baste chicken or turkey with, or as a base for soups. There are so many different ways to use it – you can even drink it plain!
Ingredients for Homemade Vegetable Broth
- Vegetable Scraps
- Water
- Seasoning of choice
- I use: Salt
- Pepper
- Chicken/Vegetable Bouillon Cubes
- Sazon
- Fiesta Brand Season it All
Instructions:
- Save your vegetable scraps in a freezer bag until you’re ready to make your broth.
- Put your vegetable scraps in a crock pot or in a large pot on your stovetop.
- Fill your pot with water.
- Add seasoning. Remember, you can always add more, so start with a little less than you think you need. I typically start with two packets of Sazon and two bouillon cubes and probably about half a teaspoon each of salt and pepper – then I taste throughout the cooking process and add more as necessary.
- If you’re using a crockpot, I usually have it on high for at least an hour then change the temp to low for 3-4 hours. On the stove, bring to a boil, then let it simmer for a few hours.
- Strain out the vegetables.
- If you are going to freeze, put it in jars with at least an inch of headroom so the liquid can expand. I like to freeze mine in different size jars so I can thaw them out for different types of recipes.
And that’s it! Making your own homemade vegetable broth is easy, inexpensive, healthy, and great to have on hand! You can use it in any savory recipe to replace the water! If you’re growing your own vegetables, this is also a great way to use up some of your vegetables from the garden – or a great base for a vegetable soup! Don’t forget to compost the vegetables after you’re done cooking them!
Enjoy!
