How to Prep Furniture Before Painting:
Step 1) Inspect for mold and remove if necessary
Step 2) Get rid of any loose paint layers that are peeling or chipping
Step 3) Remove hardware if you don’t want it painted
Step 4) Clean your surface well with a gentle soap and water, then let it dry completely
Step 5) Use nail polish remover to check if the previous finish was oil-based. If the color comes off using nail polish, it’s water-based; if the color doesn’t come off onto a q-tip, it’s oil-based
Step 6) For shiny surfaces, give your piece a light sanding. For oil-based pieces, priming is the easiest and safest option as water-based paint will not be able to adhere to it
Step 7) Do a scratch test on a small area to test the adhesion
