Ever since my days at Refinery29, I’ve begun making loads of sustainable swap-outs! In today’s video, I’m going through my apartment to show you many of the sustainable swaps I’ve made, and 20 things that I just DO NOT buy anymore! If you know me, you know that sustainable living has become a major part of my lifestyle at home and my platform over here on YouTube. I have made quite a few adjustments at home to make our NYC lifestyle more sustainable and eco-conscious, and while I still have a ways to go and am not doing everything perfectly, these are just a few things that I don’t need to buy anymore!
This video is for those who want to focus more on:
– eco-conscious consumption
– healthy living
– slow living
– intentional living
– sustainable living
– simple living
These swaps have helped us make better choices for our health & the planet, all while saving money along the way. In the kitchen, I’ve eliminated a lot of harsh dish and hand soaps. Not only are they bad for the environment, but they’re also not great for humans! The same goes for plastic tupperware. I donated mine and switched over to 100% glassware!
It has been tough for us to eliminate paper towels altogether because, every so often, I find they’re necessary! But whenever I can, I go for the dish towel or a Swedish dishcloth instead. The key to cultivating a more sustainable kitchen is to eliminate as much unnecessary plastic as possible (things like plastic silverware, straws, water bottles, etc.).
After a lot of trips to the grocery store, I’ve learned a few key hacks that have helped me eliminate plastic all around. Something I no longer “buy”: plastic bags from the grocery store. I say “buy” here because, much of the time, grocery stores make you PAY for bags now! I love this and it incentivizes us all to bring our own bags from home.
Recently, I’ve also eliminated any toxin-producing products in our apartment. Things like air fresheners, crazy scented candles, and even a lot of cleaning products. There are so many “cleaner” and more environmentally friendly products that I’ve replaced them with.
Throughout my sustainable living journey, I’ve learned how key it is to implement little tiny swaps in your day-to-day life that will eventually lead to a healthier and happier lifestyle (for YOU and the planet). Don’t let the fear of not being able to do as much as somebody else keep you from doing anything at all! Remember, nobody’s perfect, but it’s the small swaps that count and add up over time. I hope you enjoyed hearing about a few of my favorite sustainable swaps. Let me know what some of yours are below!
