This week we will introduce you to each animal on the farm! — Highlighting their purpose in our permaculture system. We use ducks as pesticides, chickens as no-dig garden bed / compost makers, and sheep and goats as lawnmowers — we follow a rotational / cell grazing system where they eat weeds and grasses and help to regenerate the land from degraded farmland into an immense food forest with pockets of native bush and wilderness. All the animals fertilise our gardens and fruit trees as they go — increasing the fertility of the soil, and our overall soil health. They also eat the fallen fruit in orchards, protecting from fruit flies and pests. Each animal holds a special role in this system, but they are also here for cuddles, and overall sweetness!
We are sisters, Julia and Anastasia — working our way towards self sufficiency and off grid living on Bundjalung Country in the rainforests of East Australia. We moved from the city to our family’s regenerative, organic farm with a dream to create a more sustainable future for generations to come.
Join us as we learn to care for the land, the animals, and take steps every day to live self-sufficiently!
Here we will share a weekly diary of our trials and joys as we learn to be gardeners, builders, farmers and carers for the land and animals.
