Mama and Hapa’s Zero Waste Shop in Southeast Portland opened in mid-May. They sell household cleaning products and other reusables like, utensils, toothbrushes, even feminine products.
The entire process is contactless and cashless. When you walk in, you take a RFID card and hold it up to a sensor to dispense your product. The card memorizes how much you get and the price so when you scan it at checkout, the total cost appears. Owner Ross Ching got the idea after seeing breweries deploy similar dispensing systems.
The goal is to use less plastics and nothing sold in the store is single-use. There are even free jars for customers to use and either keep or return.
