You don’t need a green thumb to grow beautiful red and purple flowers. Caring for fuschia plants is as rewarding as it is challenging.
Step 1: Plant in the shade
Plant your fuschia in the right location. Fuschia plants like some sun in the morning and late afternoon, but prefer shade during the hottest part of the day.
Step 2: Keep cool
Keep the fuschia cool to produce a stronger plant. They like weather that does not reach more than 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
Step 3: Provide good drainage
Plant your fuschia in soil with good drainage. Add bone meal to the soil for better results — the roots rot easily and bone meal, high in phosphorous, helps strengthen roots.
Tip
If you’re planting fuschia in containers, make sure the containers have sufficient drainage holes.
Step 4: Watch for insects
Watch for insects where the stem and leaf meet. Spray a systemic insecticide if you spot insects.
Tip
Spider mites and whiteflies tend to attack the fuschia.
Step 5: Deadhead the seed pod
Deadhead the seed pod of each bloom when they begin to shrivel. If the seed pod is left after a flower falls, it will drain the nutrients, preventing more blooms.
Step 6: Fertilize the plant
Add a blooming plant fertilizer to your fuschia once a week until the end of summer or until the stems become wood-like. Bring it inside for the winter before the first frost and you will be able to enjoy the delicate, beautiful blooms the following year.
