Composting only requires these ingredients:
– 25 parts carbon (browns such as dead leaves and shredded newspapers)
– 1 part nitrogen (oragnic waste, food scraps, grass clippings)
– Water
– Oxygen
You put this all in a pile and you turn it every 4-5 days. Turning it allows oxygen to come in the pile. Make sure to add water too while you are turning the pile!
The pile will heat up, decompose and in a few months you will have finished black compost.
It’s that simple!
Quick important tips:
– Cover your nitrogen (ex. food scraps) with carbon (ex. dead leaves)
– Cover your compost pile with landscaping fabric to lock in the moisture.
You can put your compost pile virtually anywhere. It’s best to keep it contained in a structure like the one we made with pallets. It allows airflow, and it is easy to turn the pile when necessary.

Silly gaffe at 0:19 – I said, “organic food waste”, when I should have said “organic waste, and food scraps”.
