Don’t get stressed about putting in zippers. Sewing a zipper is really easy if you follow these few tips for success.
Hi, I’m Angela Wolf! I’m going to show you how to sew in a standard all-purpose zipper. This same technique can be used in garments, bags, linings, you name it.
Here I have the zipper and a couple of 2″ wide strips of fusible interfacing that are cut about 1″ longer than the zipper. On your machine you’ll need standard presser foot and also a zipper foot.
On the back seam of this skirt I’ve transferred the markings from the pattern that indicate the bottom edge of the zipper opening
Start by pressing the fusible interfacing to the wrong side of the fabric along each side of the seam where the zipper goes. The interfacing will help stabilize the seam.
On your sewing machine change the stitch length to a baste stitch of 5.0.
Using the standard presser foot stitch from the top of the zipper opening down to the bottom (of the zipper opening.)
Change the stitch length back to a normal length of 2.5 or 3.0; back stitch and then stitch the rest of the seam. I am using contrasting thread so you can see the stitches better, but you would use matching thread.
Press the seam open
Lay the zipper flat and face down. Then align the seam with the teeth on the zipper and pin in place.
A quick hand-basting stitch will hold the zipper in place giving you more accurate placement. Be sure to insert the needle in and out of all the layers of fabric and zipper tape.
Now make a chalk mark where the bottom of the zipper base is located.
You do not want to accidentally stitch over that metal bump or the needle will surely break.
Now, change to a zipper foot. This will allow you to stitch close to the zipper without stitching on top of its teeth.
Start stitching down this side, until you get past the zipper stop.
Making sure the needle is all the way down, turn the fabric and stitch 1, 2, 3, 4 stitches – then put the needle in the down position again and turn the fabric, and continue stitching up the other side.
Remove both sets of basting stitches and that’s it – you have a perfect zipper!
