In this video, you’ll see how easy cotton is to work with, and learn which thread, needles and notions work best. You’ll also see how to prep the fabric for your project and how to finish seams. Cotton is not only the simplest fabric to sew, it is also one of the most fun fabrics to sew because it comes in endless colors and patterns. Cotton is also very versatile because it can be used to make apparel and accessories, home decor like pillow covers and curtains, and quilts. Finally, cotton is fairly inexpensive!
Cotton can be cut with fabric scissors or a rotary blade and mat. When working with printed cottons, pay attention to the direction of the print to make sure it is facing the same direction on your final project. You can use an all-purpose thread for most projects. Choose the dominant color for the thread color to help the stitching blend in. A universal needle and quilting fine or satin pins are perfect for working with cotton. Like all wovens, cotton will fray as it is handled, so seams should be finished. Trimming the raw seams with pinking shears or using zig-zag stitches are both easy solutions for your seams. Before starting a project, pre-wash and dry cotton if shrinkage is a concern. Wrinkles can be removed with a hot iron and steam. A pressing cloth can be used to protect projects from scorching.
