Guest presenter Hannah Moloney shares a tip for making your compost rodent-proof.
Rats love compost bins as they provide warmth, nesting materials and of course food. Most compost bins don’t have a base though, which allows rats to dig down and get in from underneath. Here’s a simple way to create a base for your bin:
What you need
Vermin Mesh (Steel mesh with openings of about 5mm)
Wire cutters
Gardening gloves
What to do
1. Roll out the mesh and place compost bin on top. Use wire cutters to cut a square off the roll.
2. Cut a rough circle shape around the bin, leaving at least a 10cm edge.
3. With gloves on, fold the edge of the mesh over the bottom edge of the bin. You’re your best gardening boots on, stomp down firmly on the mesh to keep it secure. Make sure it’s gripping well but easy enough to remove when it comes time to empty the bin.
The small holes in the mesh will allow worms to freely move in and out but will stop rats in their tracks!
