2 Min. Tip: How We Keep Compost & Red Wigglers Warm All Winter

By letter2self on September 1, 2023

In today’s 2 minute tip, I talk about how we keep compost warm enough for red wiggler composting worms to survive our cold winters here in zone 5!

If you shop on Amazon, you can support OYR simply by clicking this link (bookmark it too) before shopping: http://www.amazon.com/?tag=oneya-20

How we keep red wigglers alive through the winter in zone 5:

1) Build a large hot compost pile for the worms in the fall (at least 1 cubic yard)
2) Make sure the compost pile is in a sunny location
3) Keep the pile hot as long as possible by continuing to add brown and green ingredients as the compost cooks down
4) Cover the pile with a sheet of plastic

OYR is all about growing a lot of food on a little land using sustainable organic methods, while keeping costs and labor at a minimum. Emphasis is placed on improving soil quality with compost, mulch, and compost tea. No store-bought fertilizers, soil amendments, pesticides, compost activators, etc. are used.
