After touring the first ancient irrigation system, Misfat Al Abriyeen, Geoff explored Birkat Al Mouz, where the water system is channeled over a wall to maintain a high water level for as long as possible before it is distributed to gardens.
At Birkat Al Mouz, we can see the result of a water system managed for 2.5 thousand years. Water comes from a canal in the valley, moves through the castle, pass the mosque, through men’s and women’s cleaning areas, and is then divided amongst the villages below.
The farming system has a lot of dates and forage crops for animals. It also has a wall with running atop it to keep the water as high as possible as long as possible.
Crop fields are divided by flood banks, and the channel is divided so that each section can be flooded individually. This is water planning at an extreme level.
