Grow Food Here: Peachtree Corners, Georgia

By letter2self on January 9, 2024

Rob and Joan Flanders never imagined they’d become farmers. But as recent empty-nesters, starting a vertical farming business gave Rob and Joan a sense of fulfillment.

The three hydroponic farms that make up Corner Greens, their Freight Farming business, are very different from the traditional farm you might imagine. They are living walls inside a shipping container that utilizes indoor farming technology to make hydroponic farming for beginners like Rob and Joan easy. The Flanders love that many of the farm oversight tasks in their Freight Farm can be done via their phones — with the touch of a button, they can monitor pH, check nutrient levels, and more! Plus, this indoor farming technology means that Corner Greens is able to consistently produce top-quality greens and vegetables year-round.

365 days a year, they grow a wide variety of produce, including French breakfast radishes — a newer offering that is among their most popular. They consistently sell 250 radishes a week, with customers still clamoring for more when they run out. Beyond growing greens, the Flanders are growing a thriving vertical farming business.

They’re filling a need: in populous Metro-Atlanta, land developers with deep pockets have scooped up farmland to build housing. Land that was traditionally farmed is disappearing. Hydroponic farms like Corner Greens help to take its place, and Rob and Joan’s success proves that vertical farming businesses are a promising solution for the future — both viable for business owners and as a solution to local food needs.

Beyond business, Corner Greens is a personal story. When their daughter became vegetarian, Rob and Joan began eating a healthier, more plant-based diet. As they ate better, they felt better — and as they felt better, they exercised more. The health benefit of nutritious vegetables has never been clearer: due to their healthy lifestyle, Rob was able to go off his blood pressure and cholesterol medicines. Veggies for the win!
