Novice veg growers from the Eden area in Cumbria gave their skills a boost on 21 September 2014 at a free one-day training course as part of Penrith & Eden Freegle’s ‘Grow Your Own’ campaign.
The course was run for Freegle by Lynn Barnes of Vista Veg at their polytunnel site in Crosby Ravensworth, Cumbria, in association with Penrith Action for Community Transition (PACT).
Freegle was able to offer the places free of charge thanks to funding which the ‘Grow Your Own’ project received from the Big Lottery’s Communities Living Sustainably Fund, through the Sustain Eden programme managed by Penrith charity Cumbria Action for Sustainability.
“People have told us at events and in our surveys that they’d like to grow their own food but don’t have the knowledge,” said Chris Cant from Freegle. “We ran regular Visiting Edible Gardens (VEG) events in 2014 to let people learn from experienced growers and the training course was the next step.”
“The course covers planning out space and what to grow, when to plant and harvest, how to sow seeds successfully, taking cuttings, transplanting, caring for growing plants and harvesting crops and seeds for the next year,” Chris said. “It’s a hands-on, beginner’s guide to growing food, which we hope will produce a crop of new veg growers!”
