I’ve been very much into composting since I started my zero-waste journey in 2016. As we live in a small apartment in NYC – without a balcony or garden – I didn’t want a worm bin. So I’m excited that New York City now offers these amazing orange bins in many neighborhoods!
They come with the “NYC Smart Compost” app, with which you can unlock the bins. The cool thing is that now you can compost vegan items and animal products! They recommend using bags not to make it as yucky. So I use empty potato bags and other bags that accumulate. But you can also use paper bags.
After decluttering my home with the KonMari Method in 2016, I had more capacity and started learning about a zero-waste and plastic-free lifestyle. One of my big inspirations was Bea Johnson’s TED Talk about Zero Waste. She shares the 5 R’s: Refuse – Reduce – Reuse – Recycle – Rot. I would throw in a “Repair” for good measure and make it the 6 R’s.
Don’t get me wrong; there is still enough trash (and yes, many single-use plastics) I produce. So still a long way to go. But it’s not the big change you make, but the many little ones that turn out to be a big one after a long time. Tiny steps are ok!
If you live in NYC, give the bins a try! I collect my compost in the freezer and bring it away once or twice weekly.
