A regional perspective on adapting inland glacial lakes fisheries management to climate change

By letter2self on November 16, 2024

Part of the Midwest Glacial Lakes Partnership Lake Conservation Webinar Series.

Presentation by Dr. Ralph Tingley. Climate change is altering glacial lake fisheries in the United States, presenting a complex challenge for fisheries managers. In this webinar, we outline processes that support the adaptation of inland glacial lakes fisheries management to climate change. Using examples from the glacial lakes region, we outline an approach for regional prioritization, specify approaches for moving from prioritization to on-the-ground action, and provide guidance on the implementation of plans given anticipated barriers to success. We find that integrating ecological, social, and economic data with climate change vulnerability assessments can be useful in generating “lake-priority levels” to help identify where to focus traditional (e.g., stocking, harvest regulations) and non-traditional (e.g., catchment land management) management approaches. Regional planning may be an important step towards successful climate adaptation for inland glacial lakes fisheries management, and proactive efforts may help facilitate their development and implementation.
