How does Green Waste Compost grow microgreens compared to our favorite grow medium, CocoCoir!? Usually, when picking a grow medium for Microgreens, especially a soil-like medium, it’s generally better to go with a ‘Seedling Mix’ or ‘Seed Starting Mix’ since Microgreens grow at such fast rates and they don’t have enough time to break down everything that’s in Compost to utilize the nutrients like adult crops can.
🤔However, Compost is something that is so widely available and very cheap when bought in bulk but does have it’s own down sides to consider when using… So, we put it to the test to see how it would grow Microgreens when compared to a grow medium that we know always provides us with awesome results. For this experiment we grew Black Oil Sunflowers and did not add Nutrients at all… (only bottom watering with regular filtered water.) Compost already has Nutrients and it would likely ‘burn’ the crop if we added more… We primarily wanted to see how the growth would compare to a Medium like CocoCoir that is mostly an inert medium.
