Today we’re touring Hayal’s garden, another local permaculture site here in the desert. This small site is packed with great examples of applied permaculture design. The entrance leads through a row of date palms and a young food forest to a shed with solar panels on the roof and a battery bank inside. A brand new garden built on hard ground is in full production as we move into the cool season and trees have been left in the garden, even under the shade cloth cover. Despite being in the desert, a tropical custard apple is thriving and just finished producing before our tour. A diversity of animal species on the site helps drive production and fertility. Three active beehives are helping with pollination and producing rare desert honey. There’s also a flock of sheep to provide manure and milk, and the classic chicken tractor on steroid producing eggs and compost. Perhaps the most interesting feature is the swimming pool, showcasing the principle of stacking functions. The pool is filled up and used for a few days by the kids to cool off before the water is emptied and pumped into the garden for irrigation. Water storage, irrigation, and entertainment all in one design feature—now that’s permaculture! Enjoy.
