️ How to Compost with a Tumbler

By letter2self on March 6, 2025

Things We Learned Composting with Our Tumbler 🥬

1) Not all foods will break down easily. Breaking apart branches and cutting food into smaller pieces can help to speed up the process.
2) Too much food waste can attract gnats. For a tumbler, you need 75% brown waste (ie. small branches, brown leaves, or paper torn into small pieces) and 25% green waste (ie. grass clippings, leaves, food waste) to balance the mixture.
3) Compost heat is produced when the organic material begins to breakdown. Tumbling every couple days can increase the heat and oxygen.
4) Stop filling the tumbler when it’s 75% full so there is enough airflow.
5) There are many different ways to compost. Aside from composting tumblers, there are open bins, closed bins, vermicomposting (with worms), composting by burying your waste under dirt and more.
