Sewing a Blouse with Upcycled Fabric

The best advice I have ever received as a beginner is to sew with upcycled fabric. You can find upcycled fabric anywhere – thrift stores, Facebook marketplace, Poshmark, etc. You are looking for sheets, duvet covers, and even nice curtains or fabric shower curtains – I’ve even upcycled a cover for a wakeboard! It’s amazing how you start to see different uses for fabric when you are in an upcycling mindset!

Upcycling a Curtain

The Pretty Goodwill Curtain

I was shopping at Goodwill and noticed a really cute seersucker curtain. It was a single curtain for $3. I thought the watercolor floral print was beautiful and the fabric felt soft and I grabbed it for a future unknown project. I had some seersucker fabric that complimented the fabric at home that I had picked up from Facebook Marketplace from someone doing a de-stash. So, I added it to my stash of salvaged fabric and held onto it until I found The Tecoma Blouse pattern from Mood Fabrics.

Here are the steps I took to make The Tecoma Blouse: I printed and pieced the pattern together and after seeing the pattern, I decided to make the neck and belt in the contrasting fabric. I was a bit confused by the written directions on Mood Fabric, so I followed this Tecoma Blouse Sew Along by That’s Sew Monica and found it incredibly helpful. I also discovered that you should NOT iron seersucker fabric, so my edges aren’t as crisp as they normally would be.

Overall, I am really happy with this project. It looks great with jeans or dressed up for a date. I also salvaged some sheets that I’m going to be upcycling soon – more posts to come!
